Module Abstract
Advances in HIV/HCV Coinfection
Abstract
Liver disease is a leading cause of death in HIV-infected people, primarily because of hepatitis C virus (HCV) coinfection. Mortality related to HIV has plummeted, but the incidence of liver failure has persisted even in centers where HCV therapy is available. Advances in HCV treatment may someday transform liver disease in a manner similar to the way that antiretroviral therapy has affected the incidence of HIV-related opportunistic infections. However, any formidable challenges to managing HCV in the HIV-infected patient remain today. This review considers the latest information on the epidemiology, natural history, pathogenesis, and treatment of HCV in this patient population.
